El Paso Leaders React To Death Of Carolina Reyes, Wife Of Former US Rep. Silvestre Reyes

Carolina Reyes, the wife of former U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, died Sunday. She was 74.

No public memorial services are currently scheduled, according to an obituary by Hillcrest Funeral Home-West. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Friends and family have described Carolina Reyes as the pillar of the Reyes family who taught her three children, Monica, Rebecca and Silvestre Jr., and grandchildren good manners and old-fashioned values.

Beto O'Rourke

The former El Paso congressman, who defeated Silvestre Reyes in the Democratic primary and went on to be elected to the U.S. House, tweeted Tuesday afternoon, "I am sorry to learn of the passing of Carolina Reyes. My thoughts are with Congressman Reyes and his family during this difficult time. We remember her with gratitude for her service and sacrifice to El Paso and the country."

US Rep. Veronica Escobar

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, who replaced O'Rourke in the U.S. House seat representing El Paso, tweeted Monday night, "My heartfelt condolences to former Congressman Reyes and his family for this loss. 

"Praying that the memories of Mrs. Reyes can provide them some peace and comfort during this difficult time."
